Where WordPress Sites Lose Rankings

WordPress will publish almost anything, and that’s where most of the trouble starts. Out of the box it creates tag archives, author archives, date archives, attachment pages for every image and paginated blog pages. On a site with a few hundred posts that can mean thousands of thin URLs competing with the service pages that actually bring in work.

Plugins are the next culprit. A page builder, two sliders, a forms plugin, a chat widget and an old SEO plugin that was never removed will each load their own scripts on every page. We regularly see Perth sites where the homepage pulls in well over a megabyte of JavaScript before a visitor sees the headline, and Google’s Core Web Vitals field data shows it on the phones your customers use.
